A Good Day For Sox Fans

It has been a very good few hours in Red Sox Nation. Sliding across the crawl on ESPN all night has been the news that the Sox have signed shortstop Julio Lugo (4 years/$36 million) and outfielder J.D. Drew (5/$70). They are also apparently closing in on signing Matsuzaka. Plus, it looks like the Manny trade talks are hitting an impasse (the rumors are that several west coast teams have been bidding against one another but none of the rumors I have heard have sounded even vaguely acceptable). But easily the best news of all? Jonathan Lester's cancer is in remission. The young man made the announcement today, and said his parents have not stopped grinning. What a glorious Christmas present for the entire Lester family.

Actually, the word is that the Sox and Matsuzaka are still quite far apart on terms and that this will likely come down to Dec 14th if it's going to get done.

And the current word is that Manny is telling teams that want to trade for him that he will only accept a trade if they pick up the 2 1-yr/$20 million options the Sox have, so teams are bowing out of negotiations. I'll be gld to have Manny back. I don't think the Sox are ever serious about trading him. They just know he asks so they make it look like they are serious and in his small brain he says "OK--they tried, I'll bring it up again at the trade deadline/offseason".

Don't invest too much in Drew. He is a grad-A shitbag.

Gentlemen --
Matsuzaka is going to sign. It is in no one's interest for this not to happen. Boras and Matsuzaka have little leverage, but the Sox have no incentive to squeeze him. the speculation among guys like me might make things look contentious, but on december 14th we will get news that the Sox have signed Matsuzaka for 4/$48 with an option for a fifth year. (That is my prediction. mark it down.)

I am not certain if making Lester a closer is in the cards, especially now, but we are going to have to see how he responds. i think the Sox would be wise to think of Lester as a big gun for 2008. If we get a lot from him sooner, great, but if not, we should have the arms going into the season if all else falls into place.

I'm not a huge JD Drew fan. But no one can doubt that when he is able to stay on the field -- a big if, i know, he is productive. With him, papi, and we hope, manny, that is an outstanding group in the middle of the lineup. My guess is that he'll behave himself in his first two years, anyway. We'll worry about 2009 when it gets here.

Of course even as I type this rumors are that manny talks are back on the table again, with Seattle as a possible suitor. One of the names being mentioned is Richie Sexson, which makes me taste my own bile.

Drew is a natural. But unfortunately his performance has less to do with physical health and more to do with his head. He doesn't care, he doesn't love the game, he doesn't have the fire. Tony LaRussa hated him. And he's a player's coach.

Obviously he's seenm nothing like Boston in terms of passion and attention and if he dogs it his tenure could be wretched. As I've said, I think he'll be fine the first couple of years, but he does always wear out his welcome.
