An All-Time Great Retires

Very few Americans have ever even heard of him, but one of the great athletes of the last century has just announced his retirement. Shane Warne, Australia's great spin bowler, is set to step down from test-level cricket at the end of this year's Ashes series. Warne, the all-time test cricket wicket taker and arguably history's greatest bowler, has had a storied (and at times controversial) career. I know him best from watching him torture South African and English cricket teams for a decade. Warne is to cricket what, say, Greg Maddux or Warren Spahn are to baseball.

Hey, last year I wrote about the Ashes when the Brits uncharacteristically won it! Admit it -- part of your love for dcat is his ability to be conversant on a host of globally relevant topics and his capacity to don an international's cap. And if it makes you feel any better, I root for England in the Ashes.
