Chafe on Franklin

The new Organization of American Historians newsletter has a nice "In Memorium" to John Hope Franklin, the legendary historian who passed away in March. The author is Bill Chafe, himself a fine historian and a past president of the OAH.

One of my fondest memories is getting to meet and then enjoy lunch with JHF. He was very pleasant and really enjoyable to chat with.

Jim --
Thanks for reading.
I met him twice. He was so kind and gracious. He is definitely missed.

Arsenault introduced him to me.

Saw a nice review of his latest book, on the Marian Anderson DAR concert flap.

You should have planted a flag in the pub and claimed it for the colonies.

Jim --
I met him through Arsenault as well! I saw Ray at the British Association for American Studies meeting in Nottingham last month. His book is apparently doing quite well.

A flag at the pub? I'm claiming the whole damned country! I'm just doing it one pub at a time . . .
