Waiting for Big Papi

Even the Boston Globe editorial page gushes over the exploits of Big Papi. Last night's loss was as painful as any I can recall this season, but this race is just starting. The Sox and Yanks face off nine times in the next two months, and that will decide the Americam League East. And if it sounds to you as if I am trying to convince myself, well, tough losses have that effect on me.

He is as fun to watch as any baseball player in history. Amazing.

Indeed. In just three years he has inserted himself into conversations involving some of the great names in the history of the game. If he keeps up this pace, David Ortiz, who three-and-a-half years ago was let go by the Twins, will three-and-a-half years from now be a surefire Hall of Famer.

I'd vote for him right now. And I don't feel sorry for the Twins. They got Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser for AJ Piersynski a couple years ago in a deal with the Giants. To replace Piersynski they brought up Joe Mauer. My god, we got screwed on that one.

I think it just goes to show what a fine line those small market teams have to tread -- they have to get everything right. Though to be fair, the idea of Minnesota as a poor, plucky team is a bit overstated -- their owner is one of the richest men in the world. Whose fault is it if he does not choose to spend that money. This is why, and it hurts me to say it, Steinbrenner was 100% right in opposing the luxury tax if it did not stipulate that teams spend that money on their teams, a battle he lost. So Phlad is richer than Steinbrenner, gets Steinbrenner's luxury tax money, ande then can pocket it all the while claiming that Minnesota cannot afford to compete. It's a huge flaw in the system.
