Cleveland Sports Update

Over at Cleveland '64 Tom assesses the state of Cleveland sports. Let's say that he is generally pessimistic about the Browns and Indians (and the Manny for three prospects trade he cites as being on the table never really got past the rumor stages) and I'd say way too optimistic about the Cavaliers.

Mark Shapiro himself said that that was the Boston offer on the table. Don and I spent a significant amount of time on the first day in Vegas discussing what a wasted opportunity this Indians team has become.

When did Mark Shapiro say that the Sox had proposed Manny for three prospects? Those were the rumors. But the only source I can find on either side addressing any sort of rumors has Shapiro not denying that such a trade was in discussions, with no indication of who was proposing what to whom. I saw no serious reports all winter that there were any serious trades proposed that either team could claim to have turned down.

The Indians still have a lot of youth, and that alone leaves them with hope.

The article was in the Plain Dealer, but I can't find it now because they only go back 14 days. The Sox were asking for the Indians three top minor league prospects and the reporter said that Shapiro thought the cost was too high. I can't remember any more than that.

The Indians are young and talented, but they have bee young and talented for three years now, and for three years they've needed a big veteran bat and they haven't done a damn thing because Dolan is a cheap bastard. I fully expect them to compete this year, but without leadership, I fully expect them to choke like they did two and three years ago.

I follow this stuff really, really closely, and I have not seen anything substantial about a real offer between the two teams. It's not impossible, but I'm not sure Shapiro isn't just spinning. The quotes I've seen from him on the issue have been vague -- the two sides could not come together, that sort of thing.
I guess I'm just more optimistic about the Indians than you are. But I'm less optimistic about the cavs. Oh -- and good luck with Scottie Pippin if that comes to pass. That sounds like it will work really well. To quote Charles Barkley, via Tony Kornheiser, after a few years away from the game you feel better but you don't play better.

I don't care much about Pippen, although some veteran leadership is never bad. I'm much more interested in the Mike Bibby or less-likely Jason Kidd rumors. We'll see.
