Bad Predictions

Andrew Sullivan is holding a vote for his end of year awards. The Von Hoffman Award goes to the worst, most brazenly arrogant wrong predictions of the year. Here are the nominees. Sullivan also directs us to Foreign Policy's 10 Worst Predictions for 2008. Feel free to dig up a few of mine. I'm sure they are not all that hard to find.

Let me do the honors with what should perhaps be No. 1:

"By the time halftime approaches the Pats will have all of their weapons at their disposal, they will be up by a couple of touchdowns, and the Giants will have to rely on Eli Manning to lead them from behind. The last month notwithstanding, I don't think Eli having to make up a big deficit inspires confidence among Giants fans. The Pats will force Manning into at least two interceptions. The Pats will swarm runners and force at least one fumble. And the Patriot special teams will have at least one big play. by the time the fourth quarter rolls around, we'll see a coronation, not a contest.

Patriots 45-Giants 16"

Yup -- That was the one I was thinking of.
i was actually quite pleased with how well i did with my South Africa predictions in last year's Year in review for the Foreign Policy Association, but venturing guesses always runs the risk of making one look like a fool. Fortunately I was not alone with my Super Bowl picks.
In any case, in our bets I whomped you so badly that by the last Sox-Yanks series you were not even willing to put forward a bet!

In the words of Austin Powers, "Ouch, baby."

However, I would like to believe that the bottles of BBQ sauce for the 2009 MLB season are going to be shipping from the Lone Star State.

As a corpulent former football coach of mine was fond of saying, wish in one hand and shit in the other and guess which one fills up faster?

But what if you wished to shit in one of your hands? It appears I have found one Eph who did not spend much time pondering such questions in the South Academic Building during his years in Williamstown. Was the rivalry between the history buffs stationed in the North Academic Building versus the philosophy majors in the South Academic Building that intense that you did not find the time to broaden your intellectual horizons?

Intellectual horizons are for suckas.
