Defending Tim Wakefield
Over at Fire Joe Morgan Ken Tremendous kicks the bejesus out of an inane anti-Tim Wakefield screed from Newsday's Wallace Matthews.

"I happen to think it's incredibly entertaining to watch him pitch. It's weird and different and fun." Here, here!
I've liked Wakefield since he debuted against the Braves in the NLCS in 1992 (even though he shut them down, I still enjoyed wathcing him pitch; still enjoy it today) There are some pitchers who are just more entertaining than others for numerous reasons. Maddux, Pettit, Pedro, Carpenter, Rich Hill for the Cubs looks like a throwback to the 1960s. I even liked to watch Mitch Williams pitch(how could you not? he looked like he was putting out so much effort on each pitch that he was going to die.) Hell, I love knuckleballers and sidearmers even better. Very entertaining.
Paul -- Good points. My view simply is that I like good pitchers and that i naturally gravitate toward guys who are able to last a long time with success. Despite the vitriol of that original article, Wakefield has been above-league-average, and sometimes well above, for many years now. How can you not like a guy like that? Plus the fact that for Waker it is always team first is a huge factor in how much I admire him. he saved the Red Sox in game 3 of the ALCS in 2004. Without what he did, we do not win the World Series, period. And for a period of about 3-4 years it was never clear if he was going to be in the pen or as a starter, and he just did what he was asked to do. Anyone who does not admire or at least respect a player like that does not merit serious attention as far as I am concerned.
Derek I wasn't insinuating that those pitchers are more entertaining than Wakefield, I was trying to say that I put Wakefield in the same category as those guys. He's been consistent (a point Joe Morgan might agree with)
1) Smoltz is a first ballot Hall of Famer. No doubt.
2) Fire Joe Morgan is brilliant. Even if you disagree with them, they at least respect you enough to provide evidence and arguments. When is the last time that a columnist gave you that much respect?

No, no -- absolutely. We are on the same page.
(Nice work with the Morgan reference, by the way!)
Cheers --

How about Glavine v. Smoltz tonight?
Smoltzie picked up #200.
I love that FJM site, by the way.
