Cheney v. Bush
Here is a prediction: If Dick Cheney foments a war of words between himself and former president Bush, Cheney will lose, Bush's famous incoherence notwithstanding. Bush was a lousy president, to be sure, but no more so than when he hewed most closely to Cheney's desires. And unlike Cheney, Bush is likable. Even after eight years of incompetence, he remains a guy with whom most people would happily watch a ballgame. Cheney is unlikeable and he is not an especially good person. A lot of people bent themselves over backward to support Bush policies that they did not really believe because they were Republicans, because they were conservatives. But even if Bush is not as smart or as articulate as Cheney, I suspect he'll win over the conservatives out of sympathy if nothing else. Cheney is playing a losing gambit here by trying to rehabilitate his own reputation at the expense of people more liked and less feared than himself.

Although it would be entertaining, and I suspect, might unlock some tongues on either side and a little more truth (possibly) might spill out. I love that we are finding out more and more about Rove's complicity in the AG snafu and other things. I say let them rumble.
Cheney is definitely a douchenozzle
Even before I got to the line "Cheney is playing a losing gambit here..." I was thinking that I'd rather play chess with Cheney than watch a ballgame with Bush. I might learn something from the former. And people would be less likely to mistake association with approval.
The only way Bush wins a war of words with Cheney is by actually being honest, so I suspect it'll never happen. Neither side wins, this fight, unless something truly surprising comes out. So far all the post-administration revelations we've had have pretty much confirmed our worst-case scenarios; no surprises there.
Ahistoricality --
I think you're wrong. Because, after all, to win the argument with Cheney, Bush can let others speak for him -- let Cheney give himself enough rope, as it were. If Cheney faces off against Bush for the support of those people willing to support one side or the other, the conservatives, I have no doubt Bush wins. Sure, the rest of us just get to enjoy the self-immolation of the GOP. But this will come down to likability, and Dick Cheney will never win a contest of likability that requres the public to serve as judge.

Thanks for the links, and for that link to Molly R's obit of John H in the NYT. I put that link on my blog as well...
I trust your summer is winding down well, and that you're starting to feel that enthusiasm that marks the start of another academic year...
Cheers!
Matt --
You know, I really am ready for the new year to start next week. Once August rolls around, you know it's coming. Smatterings of meetings this week, accelerating in frequency and length through Friday and then classes start Monday. I like my schedulke this term, like my classes, and think it will be a good semester. Talk to me October 1, of course, but for now, all systems go!
