This week ESPN.com's ESPNU has been running a four-ppart series on college sports at the Division II and III levels. Naturally my alma mater, Williams, features prominently given that it is both the nation's best Division III athletic program and more importantly is among the very finest colleges in America. The
first installment discusses how the best DII-III programs sustain excellence in the face of tight budgets and lesser status than Division I programs. The rest of the week's coverage looks at
boosters and alumni support,
fan support and internet coverage, and how smaller schools count on
academic reputation more than sports. Chris Preston of the
Shelburne News in Vermont is the author of the series.
