This Steven Hahn review in The New Republic of Eric Foner's Forever Free: The Story of Emancipation and Reconstruction reminds us that whatever one thinks of his politics (and some of his intellectual sloppiness in pursuing those politics) Foner is one of our greatest historians when he plays to his strengths.
